Teaching and learning have evolved significantly over the past two years. With hybrid learning becoming a standard in many districts, there is an increased need for accountability, transparency, and reporting.
While you might consider tracking all assets within your library management system if you are already tracking library books, here are three reasons why this approach may not be effective:
1. A Library Management System is Designed for Libraries
Although the Library of Congress supports cataloging equipment records, library staff are often not familiar with properly cataloging equipment using a MARC record template. Cataloging, circulation, inventory, and reporting are based on MARC records and how they are used in a library setting.
2. Data Becomes Inaccurate
If devices are entered into a library management system, they can be mixed with the search results of books, making it difficult for students and teachers to locate information. Additionally, circulation statistics can become skewed, affecting the financial reporting of the library collection’s accuracy.
3. Location Tracking is Unavailable
Just having circulation tracking capability will not suffice in the long run. Eventually, you’ll need to move a device to another location or report more than just who checked out the device. A separate asset management system allows for devices and ownership to be transferred between schools, while a library management system simply allows for interlibrary lending of resources.
What to Look for in an Asset Management System
When searching for an asset management system, ensure it provides inventory management at both district and school levels. Additionally, find a system that can be leveraged and applied to any resource – not just tracking technology – to meet the needs of educators and students alike.
